How to Jump-start a Car

When your car runs out of juice, you may have to use a jumper cable and a good samaritan's vehicle whose battery's voltage should be almost equivalent to your car. Having armed yourself with these two, follow the below "how-to" guide on jump-starting your vehicle.

  1. Park both cars adjacent to each other, engage the parking or neutral gear and ensure that both vehicles are on parking brakes.
  2. A jumper cable has both positive (red) and negative (black) terminals like those of your battery.
  3. Taking note of this, clamp the positive terminal of your battery.
  4. Next, connect the positive clip to the rescue car's battery.
  5. Attach the negative (black) clip to the working battery and then connect the remaining negative clip to your vehicle's unpainted metal surface.
  6. Start the engine of the rescue car. Then, start your vehicle and let it run for at least 20 minutes for the battery to recharge.

If your car doesn't start, you may want to check the cables and ensure they are aptly connected and let the rescue car run for at least five minutes. If your vehicle still fails to start, it's time to replace the battery.

Car Maintenance Advice

Routine car maintenance provides many benefits. It deters unnecessary repairs, extends your vehicle's lifespan, and ensures that your vehicle's safety is intact. And to make sure that your car is well-maintained, you don't need to be an expert. Knowing what and when maintenance should be carried out is critical to keep your vehicle running.

  • Below are a few maintenances checks you can perform before booking a visit with your mechanic.
  • Monitoring when your car service is due
  • Inspecting fluids (engine oil, washer fluid, coolant, and transmission oil)
  • Checking the condition of the tires
  • Monitoring your battery and brakes performance
  • Listening to suspension noises

To even take better care of your car, acquaint yourself with your owner's manual. That way, you will learn more about your car service intervals and other recommendations to keep your engine in tip-top condition.
