Winter Driving Tips in Oakville, Ontario

We all know how harsh winters can get in Ontario, especially on the roads. When the temperatures drop, snow falls, and ice forms, it’s essential to know how to navigate the slippery streets. Keep reading to learn more about ways to improve driving during freezing conditions and harsh weather to keep everyone on the road safe.

1. Leave Plenty of Space Between Cars

Cars may slide on the ice or snow and struggle to stop quickly. For this reason, you should leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you. You should leave at least three-car lengths or a four-second following distance between you and the car in front of you to give you extra space in case you need to come to a sudden stop.

2. Drive with Winter Tires

Winter tires are essential equipment your vehicle needs to tackle slippery winter roads optimally. Winter tires are specifically made to withstand freezing temperatures and increase traction on the road, even when there is ice, snow, and slush. Swapping to winter tires when temperatures reach below 7 degrees Celsius consistently is key to promoting road safety for you, your vehicle, and others on the road.

3. Steer into the Skid

When you start to slide, your first instinct may be to correct your car by pulling in the opposite direction. Retrain your instincts to do the opposite. Instead, go with the skid. Slide naturally until you regain control of your vehicle. You will only create more difficulty if you try to fight the motion of your car at that moment.

4. Keep an Emergency Kit in the Trunk

Pack a kit in your trunk to help you in the event of an accident or other issue. The kit should include a small shovel, a blanket, jumper cables, a road flare, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, anti-freeze and windshield washer fluid, and non-clumping cat litter (to help with traction).
